Sharjah surprised me. While everyone flocks to Dubai for glitzy malls and Abu Dhabi tour for luxury experiences, I discovered that Sharjah – the UAE’s cultural capital – offers something genuinely different. Last year, I spent a day wandering through the Blue Souk’s traditional markets, exploring world-class museums that cost less than a coffee, and watching the spectacular fountain show at Al Majaz. By evening, I understood why UNESCO named Sharjah the Cultural Capital of the Arab World in 1998.
If you’re planning a visit to Sharjah, here’s everything you need to know about the best attractions and experiences this emirate offers.
Blue Souk: Shopping with Arabian Charm
The Blue Souk, also called Central Market or Souk Al-Markazi, is Sharjah’s most iconic landmark – so famous it appears on the five-dirham note. This architectural marvel features stunning blue tiles covering two interconnected buildings that house over 600 shops.
Unlike modern malls, the Blue Souk maintains traditional bazaar charm while offering everything from gold jewelry and Persian carpets to electronics and perfumes. The upper level specializes in regional treasures like handwoven textiles, intricate carpets, and authentic Arabic crafts. The lagoon side glitters with jewelry shops selling Bedouin silver, diamonds, and custom-made gold pieces.
Shopping tip: Bargaining is expected and welcomed. Start at 50% of the asking price and negotiate from there. The craftsmen can create custom jewelry if you bring a sketch.
